Susanna Fritscher b. 1960

Born in Vienna in 1960, Susanna Fritscher left Austria in 1983 for France, where she completed her art studies. Her works and visual and sound installations explore a fragile world, reinventing our relationship with reality by suspending apparent stability and constancy, and suddenly transforming our environment into an elusive, luminous,  vibrating, and fluid landscape.

Through her diaphanous installations, Fritscher explores the space and the specificity of places in which she intervenes. She uses them as objects for experimentation as much as architecture, and plays with light, with the visible and the invisible.

Her wall pieces 'Unthreaded (Détissé)' and 'Ghosts (Fantômes)' are made from a fine textile weave unraveled to the limit of its hold and visibility. By "unweaving," the artist removes all constructive stability, exposing the object to a fragile volatility that seems to blend with the air.

"Air and breath are my materials. They take on considerable importance when I stage them, so as to bring out their vitality and movement",  says Fritscher.

Her work is in numerous private and public collections. Recent exhibitions include Le Forum Ginza Maison Hermès, Tokyo (2023); Rudolfinum, Prague (2022); Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (2021); Centre Pompidou-Metz, France (2020); Louvre Abu Dhabi (2019); among others.

She is the recipient of the prestigious Aurélie-Nemours Prize (2024) and was appointed Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture (2023), a distinction that rewards major contributions to contemporary art and its cultural influence.

She was commissioned to create a site specific artwork for one of the new Grand Paris Express railway stations. Her installation at the Saint-Maur - Créteil, Paris railway station is currently underway.
